Few-shot learning refers to the capability of AI models to perform tasks effectively after being shown only a handful of examples, typically between two and ten. In the context of large language models, few-shot learning most commonly manifests as in-context learning, where examples are provided directly in the prompt to demonstrate the desired input-output pattern without any parameter updates to the model.

Few-shot prompting works by including several input-output pairs in the prompt before the actual query. The model uses these examples to infer the task pattern, output format, and any implicit rules, then applies this understanding to generate appropriate responses for new inputs. This approach is remarkably effective across diverse tasks including classification, translation, summarization, data extraction, and format conversion, often achieving performance competitive with models specifically fine-tuned for the task.

The effectiveness of few-shot learning depends on several factors: the quality and representativeness of the chosen examples, their diversity in covering edge cases, the formatting consistency between examples and the query, and the order in which examples are presented. Research has shown that example selection and ordering can significantly impact performance, leading to the development of automated example selection strategies that choose the most informative demonstrations for each query.

Few-shot learning is a cornerstone of practical AI application development because it enables rapid prototyping and deployment without the data collection, training, and evaluation overhead of fine-tuning. It is particularly valuable for tasks where labeled data is scarce, requirements change frequently, or the cost of fine-tuning cannot be justified. However, few-shot approaches consume context window tokens for the examples, increasing per-request costs and reducing available space for input content, which may make fine-tuning preferable for high-volume production applications.
